Avoid or fix that flat and get back on the road or trail as fast as you can, I say. Whether you're on the path or in the garage, these are my favorite tools to get rolling again.
My favorite commuter/touring tire is the Continental Contacts, a British-made tire with a flat-proof Kevlar lining and reflective sidewalls. Fast-rolling with a nice side tread for gripping corners in the urban jungle. My pair have been on the commuter for a year now with three thousand miles on them -- and so far have been flat-free (knock on wood). Plenty of tread left on them, too; just keep them inflated to 85 p.s.i.!
But if you should get a flat here are my favorite tools:
Crank Brothers Speedlever (under $10): This extendable lever takes most tires off the rim in one single motion and usually with one hand. Park Patch kit -- I always carry an extra tube or two because I don't want to patch flats by the side of the road if I can help it. And I like the old glue and patches instead of the instant patches. Permanent and durable. The one drawback is that you'll either have the tube of glue dry up on you or run out of the perfect size patch when you need it. I say buy two at a time.
Portable floor-type bike pump -- There are many types of bike pumps. But this hybrid of shop pump and portable pump appeals to me because you don't stress the valve stem on the inner tube like you would when using a typical frame-mounted bike pump. The pump attaches to the valve with a flexible hosing and the the pump has a little tab at the base that you fold down so you can support the body as you pump.
