We decided to take a chance and purchased the property. We named it Heron Wood because we have a large rookery of herons living on the small trout river that runs through our property.
We have been living off grid now for 17 years now. Our first photovoltaic panel was a small 15-watt unit that was very expensive. This centre was designed as a small cottage and is powered by the same photovoltaic system that serves the family home. This system is comprised of 28 photovoltaic panels and 16 deep-cycle batteries. The batteries, along with all the attendant equipment, are housed in their own electrical building.
The centre has a small kitchen that includes a washer and dryer, fridge, and freezer.
