Possible school closing in Columbia

Possible school closing in Columbia, East Jackson superintendent issue will be in spotlight at meetings

Dena Barlow said she needs some answers from Columbia School District officials before deciding whether to continue sending her two children there.

Barlow is upset about a decision to close Miller Elementary School in Cement City and worried about the future of the school’s popular principal. She plans to attend tonight’s school board meeting.

Large turnouts are expected at the Columbia meeting and at tonight’s board meeting in East Jackson, where residents want to find out more about a recent decision to place the superintendent on administrative leave.

The controversy in Columbia led parents to start a website to lobby for Miller Principal Geoff Bontrager to keep his job when the school closes.

Barlow is unhappy about the closing of the school, but said she is focused on convincing officials to retain Bontrager.

“For me, it’s not a matter of the building that they’re in,” she said. “At this point, if Miller needs to close, it needs to be closed. But there should be something done to keep that environment.”

Barlow lives in Leoni Township in the East Jackson district, but her children — Lindsay, a first-grader at Miller, and Lexi, a seventh-grader at Columbia Middle School — attend Columbia schools through the Schools of Choice program.

The Barlows had tried three other schools before enrolling Lexi in Columbia. Miller is by far the best school her children have attended,To charge the battery, just plug the built-in USB dsttマジコン cable to an open USB port on a computer or USB AC adapter. Columbia Superintendent Brent Beamish said last week that school officials had made no decisions on the future of Bontrager or other administrators.
